RA Art

Arnold Friberg in his painting "The prayer at Valley Forge" teaches patriotic Americans the importance and sacredness of meaningful prayer. Mr. Friberg gives ethos to his argument by including George Washington in his painting. All Americans respect and admire George Washington because of his outstanding courage and example. He was a man of truth and honor and we look up to him as an example. Not only does Friberg use George Washington as a form of ethos in this painting, but also as an emotional symbol to the American people. When I see George Washington, I cannot help but feel a a great sense of patriotism, freedom, and love for this country. I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude to God for preparing and using great men like George Washington to establish this country. Friberg knows his audience well. As I look at this painting, I also see a symbol of hope for a better tomorrow. The color choice Friberg uses emphasizes that emotion of hope. The breath from the horse tells how cold it is in this painting. the dull blue color on the snow and trees gives a dreary feeling to the painting. Yet, the warm sun light on Washington contrasted with the dull cold snow and trees gives that feeling of hope that things will work out ok. I feel that Friberg's argument is very logical. Even the leader of our people, the man we look up to praises God and seeks greater understanding and help. Why shouldn't we? George Washington trusted in God for help and that is what we as a people should do. I feel that Friberg is successful in persuading Americans the importance of praying to God for guidance and support. His painting is simple, but I feel that it it works very well for the audience Friberg has chosen to address.

RA Commercial
Invest in Apple Macintosh and prevent the world from turning into "1984". They present the argument that by not investing in Macintosh, the world is in danger of Big Brother (IBM) in controlling and limiting the computer world. Adding a scene from the film, 1984, makes their argument credible because it had just come into theaters that year and on top of that the book is well known. Everyone in 1984 knew the story and could eaily understand what apple was saying. Apple made an effective arguement this way and the story of 1984 tells it all. The emotion of fear is an obvious elemnt apple uses to thier advantage to get Americans to invest in their company whehter it be through buying stocks or purchasing their product. Apple paints the picture of what America could be through thier choice of color and production design. The dark blue tint gives an erie and depressing look. The people look like zombies, all with shaved heads and the same ugly blue outifts. They all sit uniform; no emotion on thier faces, no diversity. By using this strong image of depression, apple strikes fear into the hearts of American viewers. There is no hope! Then Apple, the brightly colored, brave girl, runs through and destroys the uniformity which acts as a symbol of hope and escape. The American-Hero has prevailed! Americans love the emotion of victory and seeing the foe vanquished in the end. Those are the movies we like to see. Is it logical? IBM did control most of the computer production at that time, so it can be said that it is logical in that sense that apple wants to prevent IBM from becoming a super power. However, whether IBM is going to become Big Brother or not is an illogical arguement. I feel that this was an succesful argument on behalf of apple in persuading Americans to invest in thier company. I feel that elements used in the arguement all worked succesfully to get the result Apple wanted.

RA Print Ad

Raiding your savings to buy gas? Start saving right away. All you need is a UTA ED Pass. For yours, go to www.BYU.edu, Log on to Route Y and follow the links under miscellaneous. Fill it back up.

UTA argues here that buying a bus pass will save money and take care having an empty tank in your car. They couldn't have picked a better audience - Poor, starving, BYU Students. This ad is Brilliant!

What makes this ad successful for BYU Students? Well, first of all, we can make a fair assumption that mostly all BYU students are LDS. And being an LDS child means that we have all at some point in our life eaten from a jar of peaches our mother canned and put in the food storage. In fact, I am willing to bet that some BYU students have a couple of jars of peaches in their cupboard right now. This gives ethos, or credibility to the ad because it is something that has been around for a while, and we students can trust that it will keep our peaches preserved. I remember these jars from when I was young and I still see them around our house. I suspect that most BYU students have as well. The jar also gives pathos, or emotion, to the ad. Like I mentioned before, this brings back childhood memories. This emotion helps us connect to the ad through our happy childhood interactions. The gas tank indicator in this ad serves as another form of ethos. If it reads empty, it is empty. It is something that everyone trusts in their car. No one likes an empty tank, and no one likes to have to fill an empty tank. That being said, it also serves as pathos to the audience. “Empty again? I filled it up yesterday!” I can feel even now the frustration of filling up so often and dealing with the high gas prices. UTA is implying that BYU students can “get rid of their empty tanks”. Come to UTA and your empty tank crisis will be appeased. This fits right into the last object on the ad I want to address, the pennies. The pennies in the jar plays an important role in giving its audience the emotion of being poor, or on a tight budget. We thrifty College students will save every penny we have to get through. If we can somehow fill up the jar and higher our gas tank indicator, we can be happy. I feel that UTA effectively captures its audience and is successful in persuading that buying a bus pass will save college students money and will take care of the empty tank issue.
