RA Movie Trailer

Audience: Middle aged men and women looking for adventure and mystery with a spicy bit of romance.

WATCO watching The Maltese Falcon on your satisfaction in life?

Buying The Maltese Falcon will make you more happy because watching the Maltese Falcon will throw you into a new adventure full of treasure, greed and romance.

The one thing The Maltese Falcon mentioned the most, was the characters in the movie. Humphrey Bogart is ethos. He is popular, all the woman love him, and all the men want to be like him. "Who is this man?" They draw attention to him as a person with this simple phrase. Buy this movie because Humphrey Bogart is in it. I forgot completely what the movie was about, I wanted to go see Humphrey Bogart. It comtniues with phrases such as, "He makes crime a career and Ladies a Hobbie." The firststatement is directed to the woman about crime being a career. Women like men that live in the danger zone. The second peice of ethos, "and makes women a hobbie" is mostly drawn to the men as it is telling the men that Humphrey Bogart is a real Man and knows how to get the woman. It is true, Humphrey Bogart is the man and can get away with anything he does. Other charcters like, Peter Lorre and Marry Astor. These actors give them film its credibility. I think they did a great job with ethos. I really forgot about the story being told, I wanted to go see the actors.

The Authors really played on their audiences pathos. You want love? Come find it in this movie. There are many kissing scenes with Humphrey Bogart. Everyone wants to find romance, a little adventure, and kiss exotic girls or guys (for the women). They play on the emotion of a simple woman, a nobody, finding romance from Humphrey Bogart, even you can. Another form of pathos important to the trailer is the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from doing detective work and finding the bad guys and fighting crime. There is a great thrill in it all and I think most men, trapped in their ervyday ordinary lives, don't get that kind of action often. It has an exciting feel to it which really makes the Movie Trailer capture their attention.

The argument in this Movie trailer was logical. If you watch this movie, you will be satisfied. I have mentioned all of the different aspects in this movie. I really like their argument because, their logos fits into both the ethos and the pathos of the picture. If you watch Humphrey Bogart do this and this, you will be satisfied. If you watch him fight crime, you will be excited about detetcive work and you will long to be there. It all fits in real nicely and thats why I thinkthis argument is so good. Everything ties together well. Like I jmentioned before, After watched this commercial, I didn't care what the story wa sabout, I wanted to go because Humphrey Bogart was in it and because there was crime, fighting, kissing, and I was excited about it. I wanted to live an exciting life like that!

RA Encouter

I walked into an AT&T store to look for a possible solution to my faulty phone. A male in his mid 20's helped me.

Audience: Me, a student with a broken cell looking to buy a new one.

What are the consequences of buying an AT&T phone from this store on my satisfaction of AT&T.
Buying an AT&T phone from this store will leave me highly satisfied with AT&T service because buying and AT&T phone from this store is convenient.

Aaron, the guy helping me at AT&T, wanted me to buy a phone from his store. He was not very successful, and he did not sell me on his rhetoric. The first approach to persuade me was ethos. He talked about the big name brands in his store. He talked about the apple and Blackberry phones. Everyone knows these two companies have solid products that work great. But not only did he introduce me to the top name brand products, whose cost was at least two times greater than other phones, but he first introduced me to their "Hot Buys" which are the most popular phones, and which most people buy. "We have a great deal on this phone!", he said. I am not a guy who likes to follow the norm, so the credibility that everyone loves this phone did not appeal to me. I thought it was ugly. He also talked about how these phones now have internet connection and I could find myself on mapquest. I like the Blackberry phone, but he just didn't hit the right features for me.

His first approach wasn't working too well, so he switched it to logos. This particular store didn't have the Apple iphone. He assured me that the i phone wasn't very good. He said that is complicated and difficult to use. A more friendly and easier to use phone would be the Blackberry because it has a full keyboard for texting and it can do all the things iphones can do, but ti has more stoarge and you can upgrade to bigger storage cards. The iphone costs 200 dollars. the blackberry costs 500 dollars, but if you buy a plan with the phone, the cost of the Blackberry is on 150 dollars and the service plan is cheaper. He showed me his ipod touch and said I love this machine, but I couldn't imagine it being a phone. Its seems to be more complacate. That was his whole arguement. He was successful in arguing hat the Blackberry was a better model and I agreed with him, but his rhetoric just wasn't strong enough for me to buy the phone.

His argument seemd typicalof someone in his job. I just wasn't impressed without his reasons for picking one phone over the other. It seemed to much that he was trained to say something to get me to buy a more expensive phone. I want an argument not so typical. Give me something I won't expect and push me off balance. I was very much in charge of the conversation because I knew where he was going with the persuasian and what things he was goign to say. I feel that if you want to have control in a conversation, you need to bring in elemnets that arent thought of often and also you need to do it in an interesting way. Aaron was just too predictable and it didn't work for me.

Aaron's argument was successful in persuading me to buy a blackberry becuase I feel that it is a good phone, however, he failed in his argument to get me to buy from him. He did not offer me anything inparticular. I value qauloity over convenience and I want to buy from a store where they know a lotabou the product I am buying so they can educate me. i felt I succeeded him knowledge on somethings which did not impress me. I will not buy from that shop even though it is convenient because I want a company whose workers can "wow" me.

RA Research Article

http://www.spirituality.ucla.edu/news/release_college_experience.pdf

What are the consequences of Universities not supporting the religious and spiritual interests of their student on the overall wellbeing of those students?

Universities not supporting the religious and spiritual interests of their students lowers the overall wellbeing of thof those students.

Because, Universities not supporting the religious and spiritual interests of their students leads to a decrease in religious and spiritual practice.

Audience: Universities that do not foster spiritual growth and promote religious practices, and students who are seeking to develop their spirituality and Religious purpose who attend Universities that do not foster spiritual growth and promote religious practices.

A very successful college known for its academic achievements and studies wrote this article. I believe that their ethos lies in thier name: UCLA. They present their article as fact which I think works because of their name and the authority behind it. They also do a comparitive study according to majors. This is something that everyone is familiar with and can relate to so it plays as a form of ethos. They compare religious commitment to each associated major and which majors have the highest level of spiritual interest. This is effective in grabbing the attention of the audience this is addressed to.

They make logical arguements supported by their research describing the immediate effects on religious devotion. Students who regularily attend religious practices have a lower rate of depression and a higher level of self worth. Earning better than expected grades is a consequence of religious practice as well. Those who have some sort of religious practice do better in school and academics than those who do not. There is a higher level of aspiration and physical health asssociated with spirituality and religion. It makes sense to argue that those who have a more focused understanding and direction in life do better in every category. Religion gives that direction and focus.

This topic is relevant to the audience being addressed. If religious practice does produce positive results in every aspect of living, why not embrace it? Why not support religious ambitions and interests students may have? Universities are not spending enough time focusing on thier students wellbeing. If they would spend a little time developing and supporting religious interest, the level of acehievement on their university would be much greater and their students would be happier.

I feel that this article is succesful in persuading Universities that do not foster spiritual growth and promote religious practices, and students who are seeking to develop their spirituality and Religious purpose who attend those Universities that Religious and spiritual ambitions are important to their overallwellbeing. Their is enough ethos to the arguement, their logic makes sense, and their topic is relevant to the audience they are addressing.

RA Editorial

The Vice-Presidential Debate
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/opinion/03fri1.html?scp=5&sq=editorials&st=cse

What are the consequences of choosing Governor Sarah Palin as running mate on Senator McCain's success in the elections.
Choosing Governor Sarah palin as running mate put a strain on Senator McCain's success in the elections.
Because, choosing Governor Sarah Palin as running mate shattered Senator McCain's image as an experienced man of principle and judgment.

The editor of this post targeted not only Senator McCain and his campaign, but also gullible, politically unsavy, conservative Americans who support him.

The editor appeals mostly to logos in his attempt to criticize Governor Palin and her Debate this past Thursday. He argues continually that she is inexperienced and knows little about the concerns she was addressing. He argued that Palin said nothing about tax cuts and global warming and that all she had to say about domestic issues was the oppinons of Soccer moms and joe sixpack. He made her sounds like a total idiot who was there only to project an image. He mentioned that most americans are beginning to doubt Palins ability. Did he take a poll? He does a swell job in making assumptions and playing on logic, but I don't think he has very many logical arguements to support his claim.

He plays on the pathos of his audience in his exagerated statements: "Except, anyone who is running for vice president in these very dangerous times needs to have detailed knowledge" and "the country’s disastrous fiscal problems" or "made a wildly irresponsible choice that shattered". These negative phrases and verbs he chose specifically to persuade his audience that voting for Palin and McCain is "appallingly bad judgment". He wants them to feel hopelessness and dispare from McCain, but hope from Obama and Senator Biden. By playing on these emotions he can swing the vote of Gulible Conservatives who trust everything their sunday newspaper reads. He strongly plays on the emotions of the people to persuade them the way he wants.

I feel that the editor of this article has a very negative attitude towards his audience. He is very demeaning and feels that he has to make Palin look like an idiot to get his point accross. I get the feeling that he feels that we are unintelligable people who can't make a decision on thier own. His tone is very negative, however, I feel it is appropriate for his audience and it works well to get his point accross.

Overall I feel he addresses his targeted audience very well. If he were trying to target a wider or different audience, I don't think his arguement would have stood as well as it did.
